So far, you’ve prepared for mediation, gathered financial documents, and identified the issues you and your spouse need to resolve. Now, it’s time to step into the heart of the process: the mediation sessions themselves.

At Off the Record Mediation Services LLC, we aim to make these sessions as productive, respectful, and low-stress as possible. Whether you’re sitting down in person or meeting virtually, knowing what to expect helps reduce anxiety and empowers you to stay focused on the future.

What Actually Happens During a Mediation Session?

Mediation sessions are structured conversations led by a neutral third party—your mediator. At Off the Record, Dorit L. Goikhman facilitates these sessions with professionalism and compassion, helping both parties express their concerns, understand each other’s perspectives, and find common ground.

Each session typically follows a rhythm:

  1. Agenda Review
The session begins by reviewing what topics will be covered and these may have been outlined in advance or based on the previous meeting’s progress.
  2. Issue Exploration
You’ll take turns sharing your views on each issue. Dorit ensures both parties are heard and keeps the discussion focused and respectful.
  3. Problem-Solving
The mediator may ask clarifying questions, offer creative options, or highlight areas of agreement to help bridge gaps. You’ll work together to brainstorm possible solutions.
  4. Agreement or Next Steps
If you reach consensus on a topic, it’s documented. If not, that issue may be tabled for a future session while you move on to others.

How Long Do Sessions Last?

Most sessions last between 60 to 90 minutes, though some may run longer depending on the complexity of the issues and your progress. You’ll typically need multiple sessions to address everything fully—especially in divorces involving children or substantial assets.

Will We Meet Together or Separately?

That depends on what feels most comfortable and productive for you. There are two main formats:

  • Joint sessions: Both spouses are in the same (physical or virtual) room, working through issues together.
  • Shuttle mediation: The mediator meets with each spouse separately and goes back and forth to facilitate discussion.

At Off the Record, we offer flexible options. Some couples begin separately and later meet together once they’re more comfortable. Others stick with private sessions throughout. We’ll tailor the format to meet your emotional and communication needs.

How Does the Mediator Stay Neutral?

Dorit’s role is not to represent either spouse or give legal advice. Instead, she:

  • Creates a balanced environment
  • Ensures both parties are heard
  • Offers options and insights
  • Keeps the focus on resolution

Her goal is to guide—not to decide. The final agreement is always up to you and your spouse.

What If Emotions Run High?

Divorce is emotional. It’s completely normal to feel hurt, frustrated, or even overwhelmed at times during mediation. A good mediator helps you navigate those emotions without letting them take over.

At Off the Record, we focus on:

  • De-escalating conflict
  • Keeping the tone respectful
  • Taking breaks when needed
  • Re-centering on your long-term goals

Remember, you’re not expected to agree on everything—but being open to the process helps you get closer to resolution.

What Does Success Look Like?

Success in mediation isn’t about getting everything you want—it’s about reaching agreements that feel fair, workable, and respectful. The process gives you both a voice and helps build a strong foundation for the next chapter—especially if co-parenting is involved.
